Bikaner Camel Festival
In the state of desert sand and red sandstone forts, Bikaner is a city which is home to and famous for one of its most loved animals – Camels. The city which is less popular in tourist itineraries in comparison to other cities of Rajasthan such as Jaipur, Udaipur and Jaisalmer comes alive in the winter month of January for the celebration and adoration of camels in the one of its kind Camel Festival in Asia. The Bikaner Camel Festival is a three day long, beauty pageant of sorts for camels where one can see camels from all parts of Rajasthan gathering in the joyous celebration of this tenacious and adorable animal.
Bikaner’s love for camels is no secret being home to the only camel breeding farm and research center in the whole of Asia, the city has a unique place in its history and heart for this animal. This love is very much on display during the Bikaner Camel Festival which sees camels performing and participant in various activities and competition and in the process winning the admiration and love of thousands who gather to see them. Some of the many events these lovely creatures participate in include Camel tug-of-war, beauty pageant, Camel race, Camel dance and the crowd pulling camel procession.
The marvelous event this year is earmarked to begin on the 15th of January and end on the 17th of January beginning with the famous Camel processions which starts at the Junagarh Palace, which forms a beautiful backdrop for the festival, and continues till the polo ground. The mornings and afternoons see various camel related competitions taking place followed with cultural and folk performances by artists in the evening including the excellent fire dance. The event is currently organized by the Department of Art, Craft and Tourism of the government of Rajasthan and attracts hordes of tourists who come here to witness the exuberant culture of this Royal state.
